Women of the Left Bank.

I'm reading about Ex-Patriate Paris and the women writers who lived there. So far I'm reading about Natalie Barney. She was from bourgeouse origins, and became basically the most famous lesbian in Paris. Unlike Gertrude Stein, who considered women "weak" and thought of herself as "one of the boys", Barney attempted to encourage female authors and create a "New Lesbos" of Sapphic poets.


I just really wish I had been born around 1900 and could have been a part of the Modernist movement. Things today seem so blase. Basically it was a search for meaning in spite of the uselessness of the past and the hopelessness of the future. Now we've just given up even trying to do anything meaningful.
